Join the Wayne Cares Race for the Cure Team! Wayne State University is once again participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure under one umbrella - Wayne Cares.

We are proud to announce this year's Wayne Cares Race for the Cure Co-Chairs are Rick Cummins from the Wayne Cares Athletics team and Krystal Ankawi from the Wayne Cares College of Nursing Team.

Our Goal

The Wayne Cares team has swelled in size over the past few years. In 2009, the Wayne Cares team had 619 event participants. In 2010, the Wayne Cares team grew to an astounding 856 members strong. In 2011, we had 690 Wayne Cares participants. This year, our goal is to break the 1,000 participant mark. But we can't do it without you!

The success of the Wayne Cares team can be seen in the awards that were won last year. We need your support and participation to ensure that we hold on to these titles this year:

  • Largest College/University Award (WSU received this award consecutively from 2004-2007 and again from 2009-2011)
  • The top three male runners and the second place female runner were all Wayne Cares team members

Funds raised from the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure® are granted to local and national programs that support Susan G. Komen for the Cure's promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Last year, The Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure organization awarded a grant of $784,731 to Robert Burack of the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to expand the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program, which provides free breast screening and covers biopsy fees for uninsured women in the county. The expansion will screen another 600 women.

Check out this article on how Komen promise grant funds search for better therapies for triple negative breast cancer.
