Wayne Cares: Detroit Race for the Cure 2009

Helping to build a successful community is part of Wayne State University's urban mission. Lending helpful hands to uplift those in need is a critical building block. Wayne Cares is a university outreach initiative that brings together the university community for the purpose of charitable giving. Its primary goal is to help university units work together and collaborate with each other for the good of the community.

The Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure organization has awarded a grant of $784,731 to Robert Burack of the Wayne State University School of Medicine and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute to expand the Wayne County Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program, which provides free breast screening and covers biopsy fees for uninsured women in the county. The expansion will screen another 600 women. Click here to read the full article.

A Huge "THANK YOU" to all of the WAYNE CARES TEAM!!

The 18th Komen Detroit Race for the Cure had a great impact on everyone who has either had breast cancer, and/or who knows someone that has had breast cancer, and especially those who have lost someone to this disease. Our "Warrior Spirit" was abundantly evident with the sea of green and pink Wayne Cares shirts all along the Race route.

Saturday started out rather crisp, cloudy and full of anticipation, but by 7a.m. the sun was out and the crowd was rapidly growing to more than 30,000 people who participated in the 18th Komen Detroit Race for the Cure. Hundreds of participants from our Wayne Cares Team were on board Saturday, cheering, walking, running, shedding tears and laughing together in what goes on record as an awesome event!
