Helping to build a successful community is part of Wayne State University's urban mission. Lending helpful hands to uplift those in need is a critical building block. Wayne Cares is a university outreach initiative that brings together the university community for the purpose of charitable giving. Its primary goal is to help university units work together and collaborate with each other for the good of the community.

The DPS Volunteer Reading Corps program was launched with the goal of ensuring that every child is reading competently by the end of grade 3 in the Detroit Public Schools. Wayne State University has become a corporate partner in the Reading Corps initiative, and has committed to 1,000 hours of volunteer tutoring for pre-K students.
