Wayne Cares “adopts” Detroit Carver STEM Academy for MLK Day of Service cleanup
The WSU “Wayne Cares” outreach program will team up with students from Carver STEM Academy this October to board up more than 20 vacant homes around the city, part of the university’s “Day of Service” campaign that celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
As part of the clean-up drive, which will be held Oct. 21 from 8 am to noon, Wayne Cares will “adopt” Carver for the day, collaborating with students from the pre-K through 8 public school to tackle blight in the surrounding community.
Along with cleaning the neighborhoods, the program is designed to provide children with safer routes to schools in various Detroit communities.
Wayne Cares will host the “adopt-a-school” program in partnership with Wayne State University’s AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program, the WSU’s Dean of Students Office, Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan, Children’s Education, FedEx, KIND energy bars and other community sponsors.
Carver STEM Academy offers a curriculum focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics to encourage students to pursue STEM careers.
