Staff, Faculty and Students Visit Schools Across Detroit to Discuss College Preparedness and Share Warrior Pride

August 31, 2016

The Division of Government and Community Affairs (DGCA) partnered with WSU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions and WSU First Lady Jacqueline Wilson to visit several Detroit public schools during the 2015/2016 academic year. The purpose of these events was to increase awareness about Wayne State University among high school, elementary school, and middle school students throughout Detroit. The goal of the visits was to ensure that students receive information that will reinforce college readiness and prepare them to potentially become future Wayne State Warriors.

WSU First Lady Jacqueline Wilson and the Office of Undergraduate Admissions’ Detroit Student Ambassadors answer questions from nearly 100 4th and 5th graders at Anthony Wayne Elementary in Detroit.

Each event consisted of a half-day program that included a meeting between WSU personnel and the school’s administrative staff along with a tour of the school. Other activities included WSU First Lady Jaqueline Wilson speaking to the students about the importance of higher education along with an extensive Q&A session where students were able to ask her anything about Wayne State. Additionally, WSU’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions provided a panel of WSU students who graduated from Detroit high schools to discuss the admission process and the various scholarship options.

Schools visited includes Cass Technical High School, Burton International Academy, Renaissance High School, Anthony Wayne Elementary School, Carver STEM Academy, and Plymouth Educational Center. In addition to the Office of Admissions, representatives from the College of Engineering, School of Medicine, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Division of Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies set up tables to interact with the students one on one.
