Wayne State University Board of Governors Visit Washington, D.C.

This spring, Wayne State University Governors Marilyn Kelly, Sandra Hughes O’Brien and Dana Thompson met with U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow as part of a brief visit to the Washington, D.C. office of Wayne State University.  After visiting with Senator Stabenow, the Governors, joined by President M. Roy Wilson, Vice President Patrick Lindsey, Director of Federal Affairs James Williams, Jr. and Anita Estell, Principal of the Estell Group, had lunch in the Members’ Dining Room with U.S. Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence and her Chief of Staff, Duron Marshall. The group was then given a legislative and regulatory briefing in Wayne State's Washington, D.C. office. The day was capped with the annual Wayne State University Alumni Relations capital fundraising reception, where the group was joined by the U.S. Attorney General, Loretta Lynch.

Legislative Items of Note

Congress began its summer recess on Thursday, July 14, having not reached final agreement on any of the 12 funding measures this fiscal year. Both the House and Senate are on a seven-week recess until the day after Labor Day, and even then, Congress will have less than a month to wrap up these 12 important pieces of legislation. The House Freedom Caucus, made up of some of the more conservative members of Congress, is pushing for a continuing resolution that would fund the federal government until March 2017. If this happens, the spending provisions of the federal government will be punted until the next Congress and President are elected. Ultimately, this will lead to spending reductions to Pell Grants, research spending, and federal support of academic institutions.

The unfortunate incidents of police involved shootings, domestic and international terrorism, combined with a hyper-partisan Congress has essentially stalled any significant legislative work until Congress returns.
