Detroit Mayoral Town Hall

Detroit Mayoral Town Hall

On April 29, 2009, Wayne State University hosted two town hall sessions with Detroit mayoral candidates Ken Cockrel, Jr. and Dave Bing.  These town hall events were held in Wayne State University’s Spencer Partrich Auditorium, located in the Law School.  Beginning at 1 p.m., the first candidate had 45 minutes to receive and respond to questions from a panel of journalists and the audience.  The second candidate had the same opportunity beginning at 2 p.m.  WDET 101.9-FM had broadcast live, and Detroit Today host Craig Fahle moderated the sessions.

Noel Night

Noel Night

The 36th Annual Noel Night will take place on Saturday, December 6th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in Midtown Detroit’s Cultural Center Area.  Over 30 institutions, including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, and the Detroit Public Library, amongst many others, open their doors to the public free of charge during this Cultural Center-wide holiday "open house."  Activities include horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday shopping, family craft activities and performances by over 70 area music, theatre, and dance groups.  The evening’s festivities culminate with a community sing-along on Woodward Avenue led by the Salvation Army Band — a long-standing Noel Night tradition.

Detroit Festival of the Arts

Detroit Festival of the Arts

Taking place on the streets of the Cultural Center and on Wayne State University's campus, the Detroit Festival of the Arts celebrates the arts and presents outstanding talent from around the world, while showcasing the city's premier cultural institutions clustered within its boundaries.  Wayne State University and the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) invite WSU students, faculty and employees to help us bring the fabulous Detroit Festival of the Arts to life by becoming a volunteer at this year's event.  Positions range from assisting with children's activities to serving beverages to being an artist host.  The Detroit Festival of the Arts requires hundreds of volunteers each year during festival weekend in order to keep this remarkable arts and cultural event free to the public.
